I thought by now I would have a new member of my family—a dog. That was my plan. I wanted an English bulldog to be my companion.To add a dog to my family was about to become a major ordeal. Before I decided on the English bulldog I tried to figure out if I should get a big dog that takes me for a walk or should I get one that I walk in a stroller. Do I want long hair or short—a shedder or not? How about a pedigree or maybe one that’s been rescued ? So many decisions including how they fare health wise. One can’t stand the heat. Another is susceptible to heart, eyes, ear, leg . . . problems.
They purposely mix the breeds these days and charge a fortune for them—they are still a special breed. What happened to the mixed breeds of the past that a neighbor or friend would give you for free? They didn’t have ailments that cost an arm, a leg and a loan to have treated like they do today. As a matter of fact they were healthy and strong and lived for years. Their best characteristic was faithfulness. They had no special diet and didn’t need the air on because they couldn’t stand the heat. They were a faithful companion who loved unconditionally.

Life's Little Surprises 
Visiting from A/Z. It is a major decision to bring a pet into the family. We found our corgi on the web from a breeder just under seven years ago. He traveled from Alabama to Montana where we were living at the time, took him all day and three airplane flights but worth every penny. Son just looked at his picture on the web and said “that’s the one” and he has been such a great blessing to our family. He’s spoiled, he’s costly (he finished chemo for cancer just last August), he walks us, we walk him, but I can’t imagine life without him. I hope you find that special one too!

Thanks for encouraging me through your story. I’m sorry to hear about his previous ailment but glad he is still around so you can walk each other. I will keep looking and will one day just make the right decision like you did.
Dogs have always been a part of my family until the past few years. I really miss the companionship of a furry friend. Looking forward to being able to adopt again.
well that IS the good thing about the mongrel dogs at the pound. They usually last longer than the purebreds. Best of luck to you. Dogs can be a blessing for sure, but it is hard to get it right.

They take up so much time but they really are worth it. I got my previous dog from the humane society. He was a 9 month old pom /dachshund who’d been abused. Took him about a year to trust me, a couple more to trust others but after that he was the happiest, cuddliest dog. He dropped dead at 15 years 4 months. Found my current dog from Petfinder. You can specify age, size, sex, zip code, etc.
